SAFETY GUIDE FOR TRAVELLERS FROM CANADA

Visiting South Africa from Canada.

Practical safety preparation for mission teams, students, safari travellers and business trips. From Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver to Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Short online courses written in South Africa, for people arriving from outside the country. 60 to 90 minutes, on your phone, with a certificate at the end.

Prepared, not paranoid

A Long Way to Travel. A Short Course to Prepare.

The Government of Canada advises a high degree of caution in South Africa, because of the significant level of serious crime. It notes that violent crime has involved foreigners.

There are no direct flights from Canada, so most visitors land after 20 hours or more of travel, tired and in an unfamiliar city. GeoGuardMe Academy prepares you for that moment, and for the rest of the trip.

This guide is part of our series on visiting South Africa safely, written country by country.

The Risks That Matter
for Canadian Visitors
and How to Avoid Them

South Africa’s crime is concentrated in predictable times and places, so preparation pays off quickly.

Canadians are often seen as easy-going and trusting. Keep that friendliness, and add a few local habits.

What Canadian travellers should know

Eight Things to Prepare For

Drawn from the Government of Canada’s advice and what we see locally, these are the situations our courses prepare you for.

icon 1

Arriving Exhausted

After a long journey, people make rushed decisions. Pre-book every transfer, and don’t plan to drive on your first day.

icon 5

Road Safety

Travel.gc.ca notes that fatal road accidents are common. Avoid long drives after dark, and watch for pedestrians and animals.

icon 2

Walking After Dark

Crime rises sharply at night in city centres. Don’t walk alone after dark, even for short distances.

icon 6

Power Cuts

Power cuts can switch off alarms, gates and street lights, and increase robbery risk. Carry a torch and a power bank.

icon 3

Express Kidnapping

Travellers can be held for a few hours and forced to withdraw cash. Carry one card with a low limit and vary your daily routine.

icon 7

Card Fraud and ATMs

Skimming devices are widespread. Withdraw inside banks and malls, and decline all offers of help at the machine.

icon 4

Smash-and-Grab

Bags and phones on the seat can be grabbed through the window at traffic lights. Keep them out of sight.

icon 8

Unverified Transport

Only get into transport your host or hotel has booked, or a recognised app you have checked. Ignore offers in the terminal.

Swapping Winter for
Summer?

Seasons Upside Down

Canada’s winter is South Africa’s summer. From December to February, expect heat, long days and busy beaches, plus school holidays and festive crowds.

The change of season affects what you pack, where you go and how you move around.

GOOD TO KNOW

blue bullet list The Cape is hot and dry in summer; carry water and sunscreen on hikes
blue bullet list December holidays mean full roads and busy tourist areas; book transport early
blue bullet list Summer thunderstorms are common in Johannesburg in the late afternoon
blue bullet list Emergency numbers: 10111 for police, 112 from any mobile

Questions From Canadian Travellers

Visiting South Africa From Canada – FAQ

Do Canadians need a visa for South Africa?

No. Canadian passport holders can visit for up to 90 days visa-free, as long as the passport has two blank pages and 30 days’ validity after departure.

Are there direct flights from Canada to South Africa?

No. Most travellers connect through Europe, the United States or the Middle East, with total journeys of 20 hours or more.

What does "exercise a high degree of caution" mean?

It is the Government of Canada’s second level of four. It reflects the level of serious crime. Most visitors travel safely by using verified transport, avoiding walking after dark and keeping valuables out of sight.

Can I pay in Canadian dollars?

Our checkout accepts US dollars, euros and rand. PayPal converts from Canadian dollars automatically.

How should a church mission team prepare?

Brief every member before departure, not just the leader. Use a buddy system, arrange all transport through your host, and register with Global Affairs Canada. Our NGO / Missionary course covers all of this.
