Prepared, not paranoid

What “Vigilance Renforcée” Means on the Ground

France Diplomatie asks travellers to South Africa to exercise enhanced vigilance across the whole country. It is the same yellow level as many popular destinations, but the reasons are specific.

The advice highlights armed robbery linked to O.R. Tambo airport, car-jacking in Gauteng, and fake police near Kruger’s gates after dark. GeoGuardMe Academy shows you what those warnings look like in real life, and how to stay clear of them.

This guide is part of our series on visiting South Africa safely, written country by country.

The Risks That Matter
for French Visitors
and How to Avoid Them

Most French visitors to South Africa have a wonderful trip. The problems are concentrated in a few predictable places and times.

Know those places and times, and you can relax everywhere else.

What French travellers should know

Eight Things to Prepare For

Drawn from France Diplomatie guidance and local experience, these are the situations our courses prepare you for.

icon 1

Robbery Linked to O.R. Tambo

France Diplomatie reports a rise in armed robberies linked to Johannesburg airport. Arrive in daylight, use booked transport and avoid airport ATMs.

icon 5

Car-Jacking in Gauteng

Nearly half of South Africa’s car-jackings happen in Gauteng. Keep doors locked and windows up, and never resist.

icon 2

Fake Police Near Kruger

Assaults involving fake police vehicles have been reported around Hazyview. Avoid driving in the area after dark.

icon 6

Walking in the City

Avoid central Johannesburg areas such as Hillbrow, Berea and Alexandra, and don’t walk after dark. Use booked transport between venues.

icon 3

Express Kidnapping

Short abductions where victims are forced to withdraw cash. Keep one card with a low limit in your wallet and the rest in the safe.

icon 7

Card Fraud and ATMs

France Diplomatie advises against withdrawing cash at the airport. In town, use ATMs inside banks and never accept help.

icon 4

Smash-and-Grab

Handbags on the passenger seat are a classic target at red lights. Keep them in the boot or at your feet.

icon 8

Hiking Trails Near Cities

Robberies have been reported on Table Mountain routes. Go with a group or a guide, in daylight, and carry little.

BEFORE YOU FLY

Passports, Licences
and Flights

Visas. French citizens can stay up to 90 days without a visa. Border officials check that your passport runs at least 30 days past your departure date and has two free pages.

Driving licence. South Africa accepts foreign licences printed in English. A French licence is not, so carry an International Driving Permit with it.

Flights. Air France flies direct from Paris-Charles de Gaulle to Johannesburg all year, and to Cape Town in season. The overnight flight takes about 11 hours, with no more than an hour’s time difference.

Kruger and
the Road

Self-Drive Safari Essentials

Driving yourself through Kruger is one of the great experiences of South Africa. The risks are on the roads outside the park, not in it.

Time your drives so you are inside the gates, or at your lodge, before dark.

GOOD TO KNOW

blue bullet list Kruger gates close at set times; plan to arrive well before
blue bullet list Traffic drives on the left, and many rental cars are manual
blue bullet list Fuel stations are attended; stay in the car and pay by card
blue bullet list Emergency numbers: 10111 for police, 112 from any mobile

Parts of Kruger and the north-east are malaria areas. See a travel doctor before you leave.
