SAFETY GUIDE FOR TRAVELLERS FROM INDIA

Visiting South Africa from India.

Practical safety preparation for families, business travellers, cricket fans and groups. From Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru to Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town.

Short online courses written in South Africa, for people arriving from outside the country. 60 to 90 minutes, on your phone, with a certificate at the end.

Prepared, not paranoid

The ETA Makes the Trip Easier. Preparation Makes It Safer.

South Africa’s new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) means most Indian visitors can now apply online and get approval quickly. Around 70,000 Indian tourists visited in 2025, and South Africa wants many more.

Easier entry brings more first-time visitors, and first-time visitors are the ones most likely to be caught out. GeoGuardMe Academy teaches the local habits that keep a family holiday or business trip on track.

This guide is part of our series on visiting South Africa safely, written country by country.

The Risks That Matter
for Indian Visitors
and How to Avoid Them

Crime affecting visitors in South Africa is mostly opportunistic, and it looks different from the risks you know at home.

Learn the patterns before you land, and the whole family can relax once you are here.

What Indian travellers should know

Eight Things to Prepare For

Drawn from official advisories and what happens to visitors on the ground, these are the situations our courses prepare you for.

icon 1

Follow-Home Robbery

Criminals follow arrivals from O.R. Tambo to their destinations. Use a pre-booked pickup and stay alert at the gate.

icon 5

Gold and Jewellery

Visible gold jewellery attracts attention in public. Save it for private events, and keep it in the hotel safe.

icon 2

Express Kidnapping

A short abduction to force ATM withdrawals. Keep a single low-limit card on you and leave other cards in the hotel safe.

icon 6

Card Fraud and ATMs

Card skimming is common. Withdraw cash inside banks or malls, and never let a stranger help at the machine.

icon 3

Large Family Groups

Big groups with lots of luggage are easy to distract. Assign one person to watch the bags at every stop.

icon 7

Smash-and-Grab

Handbags and phones on the car seat attract thieves at traffic lights. Keep them in the boot.

icon 4

Fake Police

An unmarked car with blue lights is not always the police. If unsure, drive slowly to a police station before stopping.

icon 8

Hiking Trails Near Cities

Table Mountain and Lion’s Head are stunning, but hikers have been robbed. Go in a group, early, with a guide if possible.

Indian visitors will find vegetarian food, temples and familiar spices easily, especially in Durban. That comfort is real, but it can lower your guard.

Keep the same habits you would in any unfamiliar city.
