SAFETY GUIDE FOR TRAVELLERS FROM THE UAE

Visiting South Africa from the UAE.

Practical safety preparation for investors, executives, families and UAE residents. From Dubai and Abu Dhabi to Johannesburg, Cape Town and the bush.

Short online courses written in South Africa, for people arriving from outside the country. 60 to 90 minutes, on your phone, with a certificate at the end.

Prepared, not paranoid

Visible Wealth Attracts the Wrong Attention

The UAE is South Africa’s largest trading partner in the Gulf, and UAE investment in South Africa is growing fast. More Emirati investors, executives and families are making the eight-hour flight south.

At home, a luxury watch or a hired SUV draws no attention. In Johannesburg or Cape Town it can mark you out from the moment you leave the mall or hotel. GeoGuardMe Academy teaches you to travel well without standing out.

This guide is part of our series on visiting South Africa safely, written country by country.

The Risks That Matter
for UAE Visitors
and How to Avoid Them

Criminals in South Africa watch for signs of money: jewellery, watches, luxury cars and large shopping bags.

Most visits go smoothly. The travellers who have problems are usually the ones who are easiest to spot.

What UAE travellers should know

Eight Things to Prepare For

Drawn from what Gulf travellers tell us and what we see on the ground, these are the situations our courses prepare you for.

icon 1

Mall Spotters and Follow-Home

Spotters at shopping malls pick targets and follow them home or to their hotel. Watch your mirrors and stay alert at the gate.

icon 5

Express Kidnapping

Victims are held for a few hours and driven between ATMs. Carry one card with a low daily limit, and leave premium cards in the hotel safe.

icon 2

Luxury Watches and Jewellery

High-value watches are a known target. Wear a simple watch in public and keep jewellery for private events.

icon 6

Villas and Rentals

Large hotels have access control. Private villas and short-term rentals vary widely. Check gates, alarms and armed-response cover.

icon 3

Card Fraud and ATMs

Card skimmers are common at street ATMs. Withdraw inside a bank branch or a large mall, and shield your PIN.

icon 7

Fake Police

Some criminals use blue lights on unmarked cars. Keep driving slowly to a police station or busy fuel station before stopping.

icon 4

Smash-and-Grab

Shopping bags and phones on the seat are taken through the window at traffic lights. Keep everything in the boot.

icon 8

Driving After Dark

Safari roads have stray animals and potholes, and remote roads carry robbery risk. Plan to arrive before sunset.

Family Travel from
the Gulf

Seasons, Food and Faith

The Gulf summer is South Africa’s winter. Cape Town is cool and rainy from June to August, while Kruger and the northern reserves are dry, mild and at their best for game viewing.

Plan the itinerary around the season, and the trip will feel very different.

Questions From UAE Travellers
