Visiting South Africa from Ireland.
Practical safety preparation for rugby trips, family visits, holidays and volunteering. From Dublin, Cork and Shannon to Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.
Short online courses written in South Africa, for people arriving from outside the country. 60 to 90 minutes, on your phone, with a certificate at the end.
Prepared, not paranoid
“A High Degree of Caution” Without the Worry
Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs asks travellers to exercise a high degree of caution in South Africa, citing a very high level of crime, including violent crime.
It also names specific places: assaults reported in Table Mountain National Park, and a Kruger gate to avoid. GeoGuardMe Academy turns that advice into simple habits, so you can enjoy the craic without the risk.
This guide is part of our series on visiting South Africa safely, written country by country.
The Risks That Matter
for Irish Visitors
and How to Avoid Them
Irish visitors are known for being friendly and easy to talk to. That is a strength, but scammers know it too.
Learn a few patterns before you land, and you can relax once you are here.
What Irish travellers should know
Eight Things to Prepare For
Drawn from the DFA’s advice and what we see on the ground, these are the situations our courses prepare you for.
Table Mountain National Park
The DFA reports violent assaults in Table Mountain National Park. Hike in groups, in daylight, on busy routes.
Numbi Gate, Kruger
The DFA advises avoiding the Numbi gate entrance to Kruger. Choose another gate and plan to arrive in daylight.
Car-Jacking
Armed car-jacking and smash-and-grab are serious concerns. Keep doors locked, windows up and bags in the boot.
After the Match
Big games mean crowds, celebrations and late journeys. Pre-book your ride home and move as a group.
Public Transport
The DFA considers public transport unsafe. Use booked transfers, recognised apps or the Gautrain.
Protests
Protests can happen unexpectedly anywhere in the country. Avoid crowds and follow local news.
Express Kidnapping
A short abduction to force cash withdrawals. Carry a single low-limit card, and keep the others locked away.
Card Fraud and ATMs
Card skimming and distraction scams are widespread. Use ATMs inside banks and shield your PIN.
Who Travels From Ireland
Rugby, Family and Adventure. Each Trip Type Needs Different Habits.
Rugby fans, families visiting relatives, holidaymakers, volunteers and business travellers all face different risks. Find the course that fits your trip.
YOUR FIRST HOUR AFTER LANDING
Pre-book your airport transfer and message the driver before you land
Walk straight past anyone in arrivals offering taxis or help
Change a little money at a bank counter, not a stranger
Load the car boot before you leave the car park
Keep watching your mirrors until you are through your gate
South Africa is only one or two hours ahead of Ireland, but the connection makes it a long day. Take it slowly.
BEFORE YOU FLY
Passports, Routes

Register. Register your trip with the Department of Foreign Affairs so they can contact you in an emergency.

Visa Rules for Irish Passports
Victoria Falls, Botswana and Namibia are easy add-ons from South Africa. Irish passports have more visa-free options than most.
Irish visitors can enter Namibia without a visa, unlike many other Europeans. Confirm each country before you book.
