Prepared, not paranoid

“A High Degree of Caution” Is Easier When You Know Where to Look

Smartraveller asks Australians to exercise a high degree of caution in South Africa because of violent crime. It also notes that crime here often involves weapons, which is very different from home.

The advice lists specific risks: express kidnappings in Gauteng, fake police, road spiking and attacks on hikers. GeoGuardMe Academy shows you how each one starts, and how to stay clear of it.

This guide is part of our series on visiting South Africa safely, written country by country.

The Risks That Matter
for Australian Visitors
and How to Avoid Them

South Africa feels relaxed and outdoorsy, a lot like home. That is part of the risk.

Australians are used to walking, hiking and driving freely. Here, a few extra habits make those same freedoms safe.

What Australian travellers should know

Eight Things to Prepare For

Drawn from Smartraveller advice and local experience, these are the situations our courses prepare you for.

icon 1

Theft at the Airport

Smartraveller warns that criminals target arriving passengers and luggage. Lock your bags and keep valuables in your carry-on.

icon 5

Express Kidnapping in Gauteng

Express kidnappings happen particularly in Gauteng. Carry one low-limit card and keep the rest locked away.

icon 2

Road Spiking

Objects are sometimes placed on roads to force cars to stop. If you hit something, keep driving to a safe, busy place if you can.

icon 6

Fake Police

Smartraveller warns of criminals posing as police with blue lights and fake IDs. Drive slowly to a police station before you stop.

icon 3

Hiking Trails Near Cities

Smartraveller reports attacks on hikers on Lion’s Head and Table Mountain. Hike in groups, early, and carry little.

icon 7

Walking Alone at Night

Don’t walk alone, especially after dark, even for short distances. Take a booked ride instead.

icon 4

Smash-and-Grab

Smash-and-grab thefts at traffic lights are common. Keep bags and phones in the boot, not on the seat.

icon 8

Power Cuts

Unplanned power cuts can switch off alarms, gates and street lights. Carry a torch and a power bank.

Who Travels From Australia

Many Australians Have Family in South Africa. Visits Home Need Visitor Habits, Too.

Families visiting relatives, holidaymakers, sports fans, mining professionals and young travellers all face different risks. Find the course that fits your trip.

BEFORE YOU FLY

Passports, Flights
and Arrival

Visas. Australians can visit for up to 90 days without a visa. Your passport needs at least 30 days’ validity after departure and two blank pages, and airlines do check.

Flights. Qantas flies direct from Perth and Sydney to Johannesburg, and South African Airways flies direct from Perth. The flight from Perth takes about 11 hours.

Small Differences That
Catch Aussies Out

Familiar, but Not the Same

Most things will feel familiar, including driving on the left. A few don’t, and they are the ones that cause stress on the first day.

Plan for them before you pack.

GOOD TO KNOW

blue bullet list Tipping is expected: 10 to 15% in restaurants, and a few rand to car guards and fuel attendants
blue bullet list Plugs are the large round three-pin Type M or the newer Type N, so bring an adaptor
blue bullet list Your Australian licence is accepted; some rental firms also ask for an International Driving Permit
blue bullet list Emergency numbers: 10111 for police, 112 from any mobile
blue bullet list Parts of Kruger and the north-east are malaria areas; see a travel doctor

Save emergency numbers and your accommodation’s address in your phone before you land.
