SAFETY GUIDE FOR TRAVELLERS FROM IRAQ

Visiting South Africa from Iraq.

Practical safety preparation for business travellers, investors and delegations. From Baghdad, Erbil and Basra to Johannesburg, Cape Town and Southern Africa.

Short online courses written in South Africa, for people arriving from outside the country. 60 to 90 minutes, on your phone, with a certificate at the end.

Prepared, not paranoid

South Africa’s Risks Look Different From Home

You may already know how to move carefully. Many Iraqi professionals have spent years reading risk well: checkpoints, convoys, who to trust and when to leave.

South Africa is different, not because it is more dangerous, but because the risk comes from somewhere else. It rarely looks like conflict. It looks like a friendly driver at the arrivals hall, a car that follows you from the airport, or a stranger at an ATM. GeoGuardMe Academy helps you prepare for exactly that.

This guide is part of our series on visiting South Africa safely, written country by country.

The Risks That Matter
in South Africa
and the Ones That Don’t

South Africa has a serious crime problem, and it is better to hear that plainly than be surprised.

It is also a country where more than 10 million tourists and business visitors travel safely every year. The difference is usually preparation, not luck.

What business visitors from Iraq should know

Eight Things to Prepare For

Most crime affecting visitors is opportunistic and follows predictable patterns. These are the patterns our courses teach you to recognise early.

icon 1

Follow-Home Robbery

Criminals have followed people from O.R. Tambo International Airport to their destinations and robbed them. Pre-arranged, verified pickups and main roads prevent most of it.

icon 5

Express Kidnapping

Not long-term ransom kidnapping. Victims are held for a few hours and forced to withdraw cash. Ransom cases were fewer than 5% of reported kidnappings.

icon 2

Card Fraud and ATMs

Card skimming and confidence scams are widespread. Use ATMs inside banks or malls, in daylight, and exchange money only at official bureaux.

icon 6

Fake Officials

Blue lights on an unmarked car do not prove it is the police. If unsure, drive slowly to a police station or busy public place before stopping.

icon 3

Unverified Transport

Never accept a lift from someone who approaches you in the terminal. Use your hotel’s transfer or an app, and confirm the vehicle before getting in.

icon 7

Driving and Hijacking

Hijackings happen most at traffic lights, junctions, petrol stations and driveways, especially after dark. Keep doors locked and valuables out of sight.

icon 4

Hotels vs Short-Term Rentals

Large business hotels in Sandton, Rosebank and central Cape Town have access control. Guesthouses and rentals vary widely. Know what to check.

icon 8

What You Can Relax About

Terrorism and armed conflict are not everyday risks here. Heavy security details can attract attention. Calm, low-profile habits work better.

Who Travels From Iraq

Most Iraqi Visitors Are Not on Holiday. Each Purpose Carries a Different Risk.

They come to sign contracts, inspect projects, meet government counterparts, study, receive medical care or visit family. Find the course that fits your trip.

BEFORE YOU FLY

Visas, Routes
and Arrival

Visas. Iraqi passport holders need a South African visa before travelling. Business visitors usually need an invitation letter from their South African host, proof of funds and a return ticket. Check current requirements with the Department of Home Affairs or your nearest South African mission.

Flights. There are no direct flights. Most travellers connect through Dubai, Doha, Istanbul or Addis Ababa, with 12 to 20 hours’ total travel. You land tired, which is exactly when arrival mistakes happen.

Practical Comfort for
Muslim Travellers

One of Africa’s Easier Destinations

South Africa has a long-established Muslim community. Halal-certified restaurants and butchers are common in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town, and many large hotels arrange halal meals on request.

English is the business language and Arabic is rarely spoken, so keep addresses and contact numbers written down in English.
